A very dear friend and human rights activist, the late lawyer B Chandrasekhar, who was part of a fact-finding committee of the “encounter” killing of Kommireddy Viswamohan Reddy came home on an afternoon on April 13, 2000 and told me about the interesting facts. He gave me the coordinates of Indira, wife of Reddy, and Mr Divi Kumar of Jana Sahiti Samstha. I spoke to both of them separately for a long time. Ms Indira shared very interesting information.
Touched by the facts, I wrote a story in The Hindu with a title “Slain naxal was a sensitive novelist”. I spoke to his wife who gave a lot of details.
Two years later, “Sarada Sahitya Vedika” of Tenali published a compilation of four novels authored by Viswamohan Reddy. This was edited by the legendary Editor of Chatura and he also mentioned a lot of points I mentioned din my story. He, of course, had a great personal interaction with Viswamohan Reddy. The back cover of the book carried salient points about Reddy from my story.
“Sarada Sahitya Vedika” presented the book with an endorsement of my story.
I am attaching my story clip, the back cover of the book – Kommireddy Viswamohan Reddy Navalalu” and the endorsement written for me.
I reproduced the story authored by me here as it is:
Vishwamohan Reddy, the slain naxalite leader belonging to the CPI-ML (Jana Shakti), may have been dubbed a murderer and an antisocial element by the police. And, it may not be contradictable too. Yet, the Robinhood facet of his life, coupled with his literary pursuit, unfolds the dichotomy in his activities. For, he was an ideal bridegroom, the editor of a journal, a novelist, manufacturer of a tooth powder, a killer, a jail-breaker, a populist and, of course, a law unto himself.
His atrocious acts of omission and commission were hardly endorsed even by his better-half, Indira, who always detested his ideology.
He may not be a paragon of virtues, but surely he is not an archetypal nowhere man strayed into the extremist activities. The writer in him made the lovers of literature shed a drop of tear or two for him. That he turned at roughneck after embracing extremism is another story. But, a close look at the life of this hobo find one gripped by a strange feeling.
Kommireddy Viswamohan Reddy was a novelist. He authored more than two dozen novels. Popular among them were “Jailu, Dadi, Khaidi,”and “Bongaram”.
One of his magnum opus works was on the tortured and the damned in social life “Maaranahomam” became the main theme for a popular Telugu film, “Bhogimantalu”.
The saga of his chequered life was studded with numerous trappings of the good, the bad, and the ugly faces of a human being.
As his wife reminisces, Vishwamohan Reddy issued a very interesting matrimonial advertisement in ANDHRAJYOTHY Telugu daily, with the title “aviti vadhuvu kavalenu” (wanted a physically handicapped bride) in 1982.
Indira, whose polio-struck legs made her a handicapped girl, made her relatives pursue the matter, which culminated in her inter-caste marriage with Vishwa Mohan Reddy without lapse of time.
A literary buff in his own right, viswa Mohan Reddy penned scores of detective novels at a very early age and created a Sherlock Holmes of his own style on being inspired by popular authors.
Indira could not remember the hero of his detective novels. He established a newspaper by name Guerrilla and organised it from Inkollu of Prakasam district in 1984-85.
Though it sounds amusing, the little known fact to the people is that Reddy ran a cottage industry and manufactured at toothpowder with the brand name, Guerilla.
As Mr Divi Kumar, an activist of Jana Sahiti Samskritika Samstha of Vuyyuru in Krishna district, recalls four of his novels were published in “Chatura”, a monthly novel published by Eenadu group, in four successive months from January to April in 1982.
Viswa Mohan Reddy was a member of Jana Sahiti Samstha. At least a dozen novels authored by him were published by “Chathura” says Mr. Divi Kumar. The literary magazine, “Praja Sahiti”, published a 13 page write-up about the woks of Vishwa Mohan Reddy in its 200th edition.
Initially, he was a democratic revolutionary. Viswamohan Reddy prompted his wife, who is a teacher in Zilla Parishad High school, to stage a hunger strike to ensure punishment to her headmaster, who teased her on account of her disability, when she was working at Endugam Palem of Nadendla mandal. The couple achieved their goal through “satyagraha”. She is now working in the ZP high school Piduguralla.
Reddy’s alleged involvement in at least four murder cases, a highway robbery, barbarous attacks on gullible people, encroachment of land, factional fights and jailbreaking have all smacked of his anti-social activities.
It is said that he managed the prison guards, while he was in Vinukonda sub-jail, and went out to conduct a private Panchayat.
Notwithstanding a manhunt for him by the police, Viswamohan Reddy, who has been actively indulging in extremist activities in Piduguralla and Vinukonda areas of Guntur district, reportedly became the darling of masses in Manginapalli Village near Donakonda in Prakasam district in just six months.
He distributed the “Inam” lands and barren tracts in that village to the landless poor irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. Whether what he did was in accordance with the law or in contravention of it was not the botheration of the villagers.
He had a running feud with the mandal parishad president of Vinukonda, Mr Bathula Manepalli, a Congress leader. The sitzkrieg between Vishwa Mohan Reddy and the police came to an end when he was killed in an encounter near Dondapadu.
